Applying Principles of Inquiry Based Practices

Image
Inquiry Learning This weeks resources have opened my eyes further to skills associated with inquiry learning. I thought that I had developed a pretty deep understanding of this topic previously, but I find myself able to apply and relate to inquiry based practices even more now that I'm truly understanding the concept. Inquiry learning is not just providing students with technology and allowing them to create presentations demonstrating their understanding. Inquiry learning nurtures  a deep way of thinking and doing with students. For example, inquiry develops a deeper understanding of content, developing communication, questions, and research skills that are needed for applying in real world situations. Most importantly, inquiry learning assists students in being more confident and independent 21st century learners.  Teachers can teach well without the use of technology, but the students will not be able to move beyond that barrier in real life without successful l...

Achieving My Learning Goals

Image
As I continue as a student throughout my Information Fluency and Inquiry Course, I feel myself progressing through my learning goals that I have previously identified. Prior to learning about digital fluency, I struggled with finding relevant resources and often went with the first resource that seemed closest in relation to my research. Miller states, “the main  difficulty was not getting hold of good information but knowing what information to trust.” (Miller, 2012). Far too often I found myself using resources that were somewhat questionable. However, I have learned that there are several ways to check the accuracy of the sources that I want to use. Miller states, “Assessing online information for accuracy or trustworthiness depends on both classic techniques of fact-checking and new, sometimes quite specific skills, that apply these techniques to the internet” (Miller, 2012). I plan to use these techniques learned so far in this course to help me check...

Letting Go

What does teaching really mean to you in school? Teaching in my point of view is giving educational experiences to children where they can learn how or why something happens and APPLY it to their lives and real world experiences. So many view education as something that you learn to solve or memorize facts. Some situations may call for ideas such as that, but the base line for education is to provide students with life long skills that they can use in their future careers and lives down the road. This means that teachers need to focus on relating the information taught to real life situations that would be beneficial to students. This also allows them to inquire how to implement strategies learned  in different situations.  The students role is to utilize their prior knowledge of the skill that was learned and implement it in the current situation. Lastly, the student must be able to assess the effectiveness of that implementation and understand the effects of it. ...

Reflective Searching

Searching for information on the internet has never really been to much of a problem for me. I have, with some effort and sometimes a fair amount of time, been able to find the information and topics that I have searched for. However, I know now that my searching skills need improvement. I have been able to find information fairly well, but now that I know about the new searching skills and tools available I feel that I can be more successful with what I'm searching for. These new searching skills have impacted the way that I approach my research in that I can identify what I'm specifically looking for and use my searching tools to assist in finding more relevant and consistent information, sites, and/or documents. Sadly enough, not everyone is a member of the Google Generation. Yes, I was born in 1992 and have grown up using and searching on the internet, but I don't classify myself as being an expert in searching skills and tools. One thing I have in common with teens a...

Blogging Resources

Blogging Resources: Infowhelm and Information Fluency , My Daily Info-Wrangling Routine , 8 Ways into Inquiry Learning , and The Journey from Digital Literacy to Digital Fluency              After studying these resources I have found that they are all sources that help educators foster student's education by discussing ways to use resources and tools from outside of the school. Education today has limited children's learning by only utilizing resources and tools within the school. However, by allowing students to venture outside of the tools and resources provided by the school, teachers foster inquiry based learning which inhibits the students to control their own learning. They also encourage teachers to be digitally fluent. This means that not only will you eventually learn how to implement technology and tools in your classroom, but learn how to think with teaching and learning with technology and how it can apply and benefit your students....

Learning Goals

Image
Some learning goals I want to acquire throughout this course include: Developing and designing my own digital tools, resources, and technology-enhanced learning experiences. Demonstrate the effective use of the digital tools, resources, and technology-enhanced learning experiences with my colleagues at my school.  Develop digital tools and resources that will help me to support diverse student needs within my classroom.
